The New England Patriots are bringing back a former receiver to their practice squad.
On Tuesday morning the Patriots signed wide receiver T.J. Luther back to their practice squad, sources told The Patriots Beat. The Patriots created an open spot on their practice squad when they promoted Jeremiah Pharms Jr. to the 53-man roster.
Luther, 23, spent six years in college playing at Wofford and Gardner-Webb. In his two seasons at Gardner-Webb, Luther hauled in 86 catches for 1,550 yards and 12 touchdowns. In 20 games, Luther averaged 18.0 yards per catch, a school record.Luther had his most productive season his senior year when he caught 57 passes for 1,007 yards and eight touchdowns. During the pre-draft process, the Patriots hosted Luther for a Top-30 visit in early April.
However, Luther went undrafted and signed an undrafted free agent deal with the New York Jets. He spent the summer in East Rutherford, playing 76 offensive snaps during the preseason. The wideout was let go as part of the Jets’ roster cuts in August and shortly signed with the Patriots.
On the active roster, the Patriots currently have five wide receivers: DeVante Parker, JuJu Smith-Schuster, Demario Douglas, Jalen Reagor, Tyquan Thornton, and Kayshon Boutte. Luther will be the only receiver on the practice squad.
