The New England Patriots have started their roster cutdown process before Monday’s deadline.
In a surprising move, the Patriots have released three-year veteran Carl Davis, a source told Mass Live’s Mark Daniels late Saturday Night. Davis has been a quality starter for the last three seasons and will now need to find a new home.
Carl Davis posted a farewell to his Instagram followers.
“It’s been a fun three years,” Davis wrote on Instagram. “I am grateful for the opportunity here in New England. Time to take my janky a** to the unemployment line.”
Davis, 31, has been with the Patriots for the last three seasons and played 36 games in Foxborough. The former third-round pick has spent time with the Ravens, Browns, Colts, and Jaguars; the 6-foot-5, 320-pounder registered 33 tackles, two sacks, and one fumble recovery in seven starts with the Patriots. The Iowa alum has been a good depth piece for New England.
The defensive lineman played most of the second half of New England’s preseason finale, recording 31 snaps in the Patriot’s 23-7 loss to the Titans. As for a direct replacement, most will look to second-year lineman Sam Roberts. Along with Roberts, Jeremiah Pharms could help fill the void of Davis’s departure.
As far as the depth chart stands, Davon Godchaux, Christian Barmore, Daniel Ekuale, Sam Roberts, Lawrence Guy, Keion White, and Deatrich Wise lead the Patriots on the line.
