NFL reporter Tom Pelissero announced Garrett Gilbert signed to New England’s practice squad.
Starting quarterback, Mac Jones missed Sunday’s game due to an injury leaving the Patriots only two healthy quarterbacks on their roster. However, backup quarterback Brian Hoyer exited the game early in the game with a head injury. Rookie Bailey Zappe, the third-string on the roster, took over for New England. If Zappe got hurt, the team had no more quarterbacks.
With the status of Mac Jones and Brian Hoyer still in question, the Patriots signed Gilbert. Gilbert is familiar with New England, as this will be his third stint with the Patriots. He first joined the team in December of 2014 as a rookie and earned a ring in his short time before being released. Before his second tenure with the Patriots, he played for Carolina, Oakland, Detroit, Dallas, and Cleveland. In 2021 he came back to New England after being cut by Dallas. He spent most of that time on the practice squad before signing with Washington. The 31-year-old started one game for the Commanders in week 15. He completed 20 of 31 passes for 194 yards.
Gilbert signed with Las Vegas during the summer but was released when the team traded for Patriots backup Jarrett Stidham.
The Patriots released linebacker Harvey Langi from the practice squad in the corresponding move. Langi arrived in Foxborough as an undrafted free agent. The Patriots parted ways with Langi in 2018, but he returned to New England in 2021. Langi has been elevated twice this season for the Patriots and has appeared in 10 games for New England.
