Report: Trent Brown to test Free Agency

The New England Patriots and offensive tackle Trent Brown are increasingly likely to part ways.

On Monday, Trent Brown’s contract was voided, meaning Brown can now test free agency. The 30-year-old tackle re-signed to the Patriots two years ago. Although he’s spent the majority of his career in New England, he entered the league as a seventh-round selection by the San Francisco 49ers in the 2015 NFL Draft. The Patriots traded for Brown during the 2018 off-season, but after one season, Brown left the Patriots and signed a four-year contract with the Raiders. However, his stint in Oakland didn’t last long, and he was traded back from Vegas to New England in 2021.

Brown first played right tackle for the Patriots but flipped to left tackle in 2022. His production has gone down the last three seasons, and last year, he could only start eight games, battling medical issues throughout the season. At the end of the year, he spoke to NESN.com and expressed his frustrations about the season.

“This has been a year like no other that I’ve had in my NFL career as far as the amount of anonymous sources that have come forward to spew complete lies about my character,” Brown said. “It’s been tough to even go in the building every day knowing that there’s somebody that I probably look at every day, or smiles in my face every day, that is running a smear campaign.”

Right tackle Mike Onwenu is also a free agent this off-season. If the Patriots lose Onwenu and Brown, they may have to target a tackle in the first few rounds of the upcoming NFL Draft.

Since the Patriots and Brown couldn’t come to a long-term agreement, the veteran will become an unrestricted free agent at the start of the 2024 NFL year on March 13th. However, the Patriots will carry a $2M dead cap against Brown if he doesn’t return to Foxboro.
