NFL insider Adam Schefter has reported that the New England Patriots have hired Bill O’Brien as their new offensive coordinator. O’Brien has experience in New England when he was hired in 2007 and worked his way up to the offensive playcaller role he held in 2011.
Patriots fans and reporters saw O’Brien as the favorite, as he was one of five coaches to interview for the job. Vikings WR coach Keenan McCardell was also a favorite to land the job. In addition, Adrian Klemm, Shawn Jefferson, and Patriots TE coach Nick Caley were interviewed.
The 53-year-old has spent the last two seasons holding the offensive coordinator role at Alabama. Before his time with the Crimson Tide, O’Brien was the head coach of the Texans. O’Brien also spent a limited amount of time coaching Mac Jones.
The Patriots didn’t have anyone with the title of offensive coordinator, but the de-facto playcaller was longtime defensive coach Matt Patricia. That move was questioned by many and led to a disaster on the offensive side of the ball.
O’Brien is expected to bring new coaches to complete his offensive staff.
