Report: Patriots resign Will Grier to practice squad

The Patriots are reuniting with a familiar quarterback, per multiple reports.

The New England Patriots re-signed third-year quarterback Will Grier to their practice squad on Tuesday afternoon as first reported by Adam Schefter.

The Carolina Panthers drafted Grier in the third round of the 2019 NFL draft. The 28-year-old completed 28 of 52 passes for 228 yards and no touchdowns in his two starts with the Panthers. After an uneventful 2020 campaign, Grier was waived by the Panthers and was claimed off waivers by the Dallas Cowboys.

He never made a formal start with the Cowboys and remained the third quarterback on the depth chart. The West Virginia alum spent the summer with the Cincinnati Bengals before being signed by the Patriots in September; since then, he has been the emergency third quarterback on game day.

However, the Patriots decided to waive Greir last Saturday and sign offensive tackle Conor McDermott to the active roster. On Monday, Mass Live’s Chris Mason reported that Grier would examine his options before signing with the Patriots practice squad.

Against the Giants, the Patriots had Mac Jones start the game, and Bailey Zappe replaced Jones after halftime. The Patriots know what they have in Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe. It might be time to test the waters and let Greir start.

Along with re-signing Will Grier, the Patriots worked out local quarterback Austin Burton on Monday, but according to a source, Burton didn’t sign with the Patriots following the workout.

Head coach Bill Belichick hasn’t publicly stated who will start at quarterback against the Chargers this Sunday.
