New England drafted Collins in the second round of the 2013 draft before being traded to Cleveland during the 2016 season. Following his release from the Browns in 2019, he re-joined New England. After the 2019 season, he signed with the Lions but was cut after two seasons. Collins resigned back to New England for the third time during the 2021 season.

New England opted not to sign Collins to an extension this off-season leaving him a free agent. During his career, Collins has had 761 tackles, 30 sacks, 19 forced fumbles, and 14 interceptions. He has been voted to the Pro Bowl and was a second-team all-pro in 2015.

Collins will initially join the practice squad but has a chance to join the active roster joining Ja’Whaun Bentley, Raekwon McMillan, Mack Wilson, and Jahlani Tavai.

Practice squad linebacker Harvey Langi was the corresponding move that freed up a roster spot. Langi has appeared in 40 games for New England, originally joining the team as an undrafted free agent in 2017. He joined the Jets for two seasons before being let go, and he arrived back in Foxborough as a free agent in 2021.
