Report: Patriots claim linebacker Christian Elliss off waivers from Eagles

According to Aaron Wilson, the Patriots are claiming LB Christian Elliss off waivers from the Eagles.

Since the Patriots are playing Thursday night against the Steelers, the transaction won’t go through until Friday. This also means the Patriots must open a spot on their 53-man roster.

The Patriots are second on the waiver wire, finding themselves at 2-10 with five games left.

The 6-3 231-pound linebacker has recorded 16 tackles, two tackles for loss, and one quarterback pressure in 12 games this season. Ellis registered his first start against the 49ers last Sunday and played over 70% of the Eagle’s special teams snaps. Furthermore, Elliss totaled six tackles against the 49ers.

Elliss, 24, joined the NFL as an undrafted free agent signing to the Vikings roster in 2021 but was shortly waived after when he signed with the Eagles. The Idaho alum also spent time in San Francisco.

Last year, Elliss appeared in six games but has developed into a core defensive player for the Eagles this season. He’s totaled 119 defensive snaps this season and is tied with the Eagles with five combined special teams tackles.

This season, he played 238 special teams snaps compared to 119 defensive snaps. He was tied for second on the Eagles with five combined special teams tackles.

Elliss will join Ja’Whuan Bentley, Jahlani Tavai, and Mack Wilson on the active roster. In addition, the Patriots have linebackers Calvin Munson and Joe Giles-Harris on the practice squad.

The Patriots and Steelers kick off at 8:15 p.m. You can view the game on Amazon Prime.
