Northern Iowa defensive tackle Khristian Boyd is an under-the-radar prospect who has excelled in the pre-draft process.
Boyd, who played in the East-West Shrine Bowl, has 15 top-30 visits scheduled. The 6’2, 320-pound lineman is versatile and can play anywhere on the line. Although there are some questions regarding the talent he faced in college, he has proved he can wreak havoc in the NFL.
At his pro day, he recorded 38 reps on the bench press, a school record. The former three-star recruit was a multi-sport athlete in high school, playing basketball and track. He started every game in 2023, totaling 43 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, and 3.5 sacks.
Boyd recently spoke exclusively with The Patriots Beat about the pre-draft process, what teams should know about him, and more.
Watching you play, you looked the most comfortable in the 2I or 3-tech position. Do you feel that way? Do you feel that you can be as versatile as your tape shows?
I could play zero to three to even four, and I think I’d be fine. But, I mean, like I said, it didn’t matter where I played. I feel like I could do it, and be dominant wherever I play.
You’ve discussed your limited resources at Northern Iowa and how you can still excel. How did going to a smaller school challenge you to change your perspective and ensure you get the same amount of work as some of these other bigger schools?
We were built in the weight room, doing things the right way and being greedy. We don’t have that many resources, but we still make things happen. We still produce dudes in the league every year. It just starts with the weight room and grinding every day.
If you were writing your scouting report, what would your strengths and weaknesses be?
My strength is that I am difficult to get off, especially because of my size. I feel like I’m versatile. I am strong, get penetration, and can take on double teams well. I’m a lineman, but I could improve my pass rushing and refine my technique a lot more.
Do you have a favorite move in your arsenal?
I’m more of a bull-rush kinda guy. I use a lot of power moves.
What made you accept the invite and want to perform down at the East-West Shrine Game.
I actually got invited to the Hula Bowl first, and then I had a couple of days of practice and then got an invitation in the shrine game, and you know, it was just an opportunity to showcase what I can do because you know, a lot of people know me because I played a you and I, you know, FCS smaller game one, and so you know, nobody really knew me, but you know, I kind of made a name for myself.
What do you want NFL teams to know about you?
I’m a hard worker, bottom line, you know, I have a high motor, and I’ll work hard every play, whether it’s in the film room, the weight room, or practice during the game. Wherever it is, I’ll give it my all.
