After Devin McCourty’s retirement, there was a strong need for the Patriots to re-sign their number-one cornerback. Jones offers versatility and experience to New England’s defense.
Jones has played in 101 games, with 43 starts and 11 interceptions. Earlier this month, Boston Herald reporter Karen Guregian reiterated that Jones wanted to stay in New England. Jones spoke to the Herald saying, “That’s the desire, to be back here… It’s what I know, it’s what I love, it’s New England. It’s hard to say no to New England,”
After a rough 2021 season where he landed on the injured reserve, Jones bounced back in 2022. During training camp Bill Belichick and the coaches decided to switch Jones to an outside boundary cornerback, highlighting his versatility. In 2022, Jones recorded 69 tackles, four interceptions, three forced fumbles, and one pick-six. Belichick praised Jones throughout the season and at his end of season presser he said “Jon’s had a lot of good games for us,” Patriots head coach Bill Belichick said last November. “Jon’s one of our best players,”With the re-signing of Jonathan Jones, the Patriots cornerback room consists of Jalen Mills, Jack Jones, Marcus Jones, Shaun Wade and Quandre Mosely.
