The New England Patriots have reached an agreement with veteran running back Ezekiel Elliott. According to NFL media, the contract is reportedly a one-year deal worth up to $6 million and confirmed by multiple reports.
Elliott confirmed the report on social media. According to NFL Networks’ Ian Rapoport, Elliott will wear No. 15, his old college number. Punter Corliss Waitman currently has that number, but the exchange should be no problem.
The former first-round pick by the Cowboys spent the last seven years in Dallas but was released this offseason as he became a cap casualty. The 28-year-old rushed for 876 yards last season, recording 12 touchdowns and registering 17 receptions. It was one of his worst statistical seasons. Elliot caught an average of 57.5 receptions per season from 2018 through 2021.
Elliot tailed 1,881 carries for 8.262 yards, 305 catches for 2.336 yards and 80 scores with the Cowboys. He earned a six-year $90M extension in 2019, making him one of the highest-paid running backs.
The Patriots needed depth at the running back position, as Elliot joins third-year running back Rhamondre Stevenson at the top of the depth chart. He also joins Pierre Strong, Kevin Harris, J.J Taylor, and newly acquired running back C.J. Marable along with Ty Montgomery, who has missed most of camp with an injury.
