The New England Patriots are bringing back a familiar face by signing pass rusher Trey Flowers, according to NFL Networks’ Ian Rapoport
Flowers, 29, won two Super Bowls with the Patriots before inking a five-year $90 million contract with the Lions. However, Detriot would cut the edge-rusher after just three seasons. Injuries hurt Flower’s tenure in Detriot, as he played in 29 games, recorded 10.5 sacks, forced five fumbles and 60 tackles. Flowers joined the Dolphins before the season last year but only appeared in four games before being placed on the injured reserve with a foot injury.
Flowers was selected by the Patriots in the fourth round of the 2015 draft but had to sit out his rookie season due to injury. The 6-foot-2, 265-pound defender would appear in 55 games with the Patriots, registering 203 tackles, 26.5 sacks, and five forced fumbles. He was voted to New England’s All-Decade team of the 2010’s for his contributions to the organization and played a vital role in two Super Bowl victories.
The Patriots hosted Flowers for a free-agent visit back in March, as they were hoping he could help a defense that already is disruptive. Flowers will join Lawrence Guy, Deatrich Wise, Davon Godchaux, Christian Barmore, Carl Davis, Daniel Ekuale, Sam Roberts, DaMarcus Mitchell, Jeremiah Pharms, Justus Tavai, and second-round draft pick Keion White on the defensive line depth chart.
The Patriots currently have one remaining spot on their 90-man roster. The Patriots open up their preseason against the Houston Texans on Thursday night at Gillette Stadium.
