The New England Patriots are leaning into their history as they prepare for the 2026 NFL Draft, selecting former Super Bowl MVP Deion Branch to represent the franchise on Day 2.
Branch is set to announce New England’s second and third round selections, giving fans a recognizable voice tied to one of the most successful eras in team history. The Patriots currently hold picks No. 63 and No. 95, both scheduled to be made on April 24 in Pittsburgh as part of the league’s multi day draft event.
Why Branch still matters to New England’s identity
A second round pick in 2002, Branch quickly carved out a role as one of Tom Brady’s most dependable targets, particularly when the stakes were highest. His postseason résumé is what separates him from other receivers of his era, highlighted by a dominant Super Bowl XXXIX performance where he earned MVP honors after consistently beating coverage in critical spots.
That ability to show up when it mattered most made him a core piece of New England’s early dynasty. Over multiple stints with the team, he produced steady numbers and delivered in playoff environments that defined the Patriots’ culture at the time.
After his run in New England, Branch added stops with Seattle and Indianapolis before closing out a career that included more than 500 receptions and nearly 7,000 receiving yards. Since retiring, he has stayed involved in the game, moving into coaching and continuing to build his football background from a different perspective.
For New England, this is not just about bringing back a familiar name for the sake of it. It is about tying this current group to guys who actually got it done when it mattered most. Branch was part of that, and having him up there on draft night says something about what this team is still chasing.
