Brian Hoyer will start at quarterback Sunday as the New England Patriots take on the Green Bay Packers. Mac Jones suffered an ankle sprain last week vs. the Ravens and was ruled out on Friday. Belichick told the media numerous time’s Jones is “day-to-day.” Hoyer, who has started for seven different NFL teams, has the longest losing streak, with 11 straight games dating back to 2016.
Sunday will mark Hoyer’s 40th career start and second with the Patriots. New England signed Hoyer as an undrafted free agent in 2009 but let go of him after three seasons. He then joined the Patriots in 2017 briefly before going to San Fransico. After the 2019 season, the Patriots signed Hoyer, and in 2021 New England chose to extend Hoyer to a three-year deal.
Hoyer’s last start came against Kansas City in Week 4, 2020, in which Hoyer went 15-24 for 130 yards. In the fourth quarter, Hoyer was benched, but he said in a press conference Thursday, “I mean look, I’ve played for 14 years, I have a lot of bad memories. I have a lot of good memories, too. One game doesn’t define me, and one play doesn’t define me. I’m excited about any opportunity I get to go play. I really could [not] care less about that.”
The fourth-round draft pick out of Western Kentucky; Bailey Zappe will make the game-day roster for the first time this season. He will be elevated to the second string behind Hoyer.
The Patriots play the Packers on Sunday, October 2nd, at 4:25 p.m.
