The New England Patriots defense took a big blow last Thursday night when defensive tackle Milton Williams injured his ankle in the first quarter. The team ruled him out midway through the fourth.
On Saturday morning, ESPN reporter Jeremy Fowler said Williams could miss a few weeks with a high ankle sprain.
Why Williams Matters to the Patriots Defense
Williams has been one of the most important players on the roster. The Patriots signed him to a 4 year, $104 million contract, and he has delivered with 27 tackles and 3.5 sacks this season.
The Patriots built a strong pass rush this year because Williams and Christian Barmore dominated up front. Entering Week 11, Williams had 32 pressures, tied for the most among defensive tackles. Barmore had 31 pressures, tied for fourth. Their 63 combined pressures are 7 more than any other interior duo, even as both players see above average double teams according to Next Gen Stats.
After the game, head coach Mike Vrabel explained why he shut Williams down.
“I made a decision that we should start treating that thing, get ahead of it and see where he is at tomorrow and over the next couple of days. He wanted to try to go,” Vrabel said.
How the Patriots Will Adjust
Without Williams, the Patriots will rely on their full defensive line depth. Rookie Eric Gregory played 15 snaps against New York in his debut. Defensive tackle Cory Durden also saw an increased role.
The injuries are starting to stack up for New England. Wide receiver Kayshon Boutte is dealing with a hamstring injury. Running back Rhamondre Stevenson is battling a toe issue. Linebacker Christian Elliss has a hip injury. Tight end Austin Hooper is also hurt.
What Comes Next for New England
The Patriots at least have a short bye. Their next game comes on November 23 in Cincinnati against the Bengals. After that, they play the Giants on Monday night before entering their Week 14 bye.
