It’s reunion time in New England.
According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the New England Patriots are signing veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett to a one-year, $8M contract.
Brisett, 31, was originally drafted by the Patriots in the third round of the 2016 NFL Draft. As a result of Tom Brady’s 2016 suspension, he started two games for the team. In three appearances during the 2016 season, he threw for 400 yards, completing 61% of his passes. After one year in New England, he was traded to the Colts in exchange for wide receiver Phillip Dorsett. Since then, he has played for the Browns, Dolphins, and Commanders.
The former Flordia quarterback has had a rollercoaster of a journey in the NFL, primarily serving as a backup over his eight-year career. Despite his 18-30 record as a starter, Brissett’s experience is a valuable asset, and he should help elevate the Patriot’s next rookie quarterback.
However, it should be noted that the 31-year-old quarterback has improved since going 4-11 during his first season with the Colts. After his first season as a starter in Indianapolis, he has gone 13-18, including registering a 7-8 in 2019.
After the Patriots traded Mac Jones to the Jagaurs last weekend, the team desperately needed quarterback depth. Well, it’s no secret that the Patriots will be targeting a quarterback in the early round of the upcoming draft in May. Brisett gives the team a veteran presence to lead the quarterback unit.
Furthermore, the new offensive coordinator, Alex Van Pelt, is no stranger to Brissett, and both are family. Brissett started 11 games for the Cleveland Browns in 2022 under Van Pelt. According to a report by the Boston Globe, Van Pelt “Loved” working with Brissett.
There’s a possibility that Brissett could begin the 2024 season as the Patriots’ starting quarterback if the Patriots don’t feel ready with their rookie prospect.
Returning to Foxboro, he joins a quarterback room consisting of Bailey Zappe and Nathan Rourke.
