Newly appointed Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo has officially hired his first coordinator as the Patriots head coach.
Albert Breer of NBC Sports Boston reported on Saturday morning that Mayo had informed other candidates interviewing for a defensive coordinator that they don’t need to be considered for the job. The Patriots are promoting a defensive line coach, DeMarcus Covington, to fill the vacant position.
Covington, 34, has been the Patriots’ defensive line coach for the past four seasons, arriving in Foxboro in 2017. However, he spent his first two years as a defensive assistant before moving to outside linebackers coach ahead of the 2019 season. After 2019, he was named as the Patriots’ defensive line coach.
The young coach is viewed around the league as a rising threat and even received interview requests with other NFL teams last off-season. It is known that Covington has a close relationship[p with Mayo and Bill Belichick’s sons, Steve Belichick and Brian Belichick. The Patriots hiring an in-house candidate for the position could be a sign of continuity to come for the Patriots. The Patriots expect to hire an external candidate for their open offensive coordinator position.
For the DC title, the Patriots interviewed several candidates including Panthers OLBS coach Tem Lukabu, Saints LBs coach Michael Hodgins, Steelers assistant DBs coach Gerald Alexander, and Broncos DBs coach Christian Parker for the open position.
