The 2023 season for the Patriots has undeniably been frustrating for fans, coaches, and players.
One Patriots player took those frustrations to X, where he saw a misleading video.
Patriots offensive lineman Mike Ownenu responded to a video posted by “NFL on Fox” that showed Jones and Onwenu bumping shoulders on the sidelines.
From watching the video, some speculated that Onwenu was annoyed with the starting quarterback and was letting his emotions get the best of him.
However, Mike Onwenu clarified he was telling Mac to keep his head up.
“False narrative,” Onwenu said on X. “This is me telling Mac to keep his head up. Not bumping him intentionally.”
Since moving to right tackle halfway through the season, Onwenu has been lights out and the second-highest graded tackle since Week 6, per Pro Football Focus.
Multiple Patriots players consoled Jones after his fourth season benching, which came after the third-year quarterback threw his second interception of the day. Jones still has love in the lockerroom, but it’s slowly running out. Zappe led a touchdown drive out of the gate after halftime but slowed down, and ultimately, the comeback came up just short in East Rutherford.
In games where Mac doesn’t turn the ball over this season, the Patriots are 2-0. However, when he throws an interception, the Patriots are 0-9. New and old Patriots preach ball security equals job security, and it’s unclear if Jones will ever get another start with the Patriots.
The Patriots now sit at 2-9 as they prepare to face the Chargers on Sunday.
