Sources: Joey Slye has won the kicking competition

Two sources familiar with the matter say the Patriots are expected to name veteran kicker Joey Slye their starting kicker in Week 1.

The Patriots selected Chad Ryland in the fourth round of the 2023 draft as Nick Folk’a’s replacement. Ryland had an inconsistent rookie year, hitting just 16 of 25 field goal attempts. The 24-year-old played at Maryland, where he was their starting kicker before entering the NFL.

The Patriots signed Joey Slye in May after the Jacksonville Jaguars let him go. Slye, 28, has appeared in 78 games in the NFL, mainly with the Washington Commanders. He signed a veteran minimum earlier in the summer.

More to come.
