By Tuesday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. ET, the New England Patriots and every other NFL team will have to trim their roster down to 53 players. Along with players being released, there is a chance for trades or injury desainations to occur.
If the Patriots decide to place any players on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) or Non-Football Injury (NFI) list, it will not count towards the 53-man roster. If a player is placed on the PUP, they won’t be able to return until after the fourth NFL game. Furthermore, players who are placed on the IR before the start of the season may not return for the rest of the year.
It all comes down to this week for players battling for a roster spot for the last several months. Several dreams across the NFL will gradually end in the next couple of days. Speaking of roster battles, the Patriots have a couple of questionable roster decisions to make. One is the kicker position. Does Bill Belichick go with the fourth-rounder Chad Ryland or the veteran Nick Folk?
“We’ll get into those this weekend and do what we feel is best for the team, Belichick said. “That’s all I can tell you.”
Along with the kicker battle, the Patriots also have a punter competition between rookie Bryce Baringer and former Broncos punter Corliss Waitman. Belichick spoke about the punter situation to reporters earlier in the week.
“Same thing with the punter situation. Corliss had two huge punts last night, one out of the end zone, so we’ll see how that goes,” Belichick said. “It looks like we’ve got a perfect competition at both spots.”
The claiming period for players placed on waivers will expire on Wednesday, August 30. At that time, teams can start assembling their 16-man practice squad. However, it’s important to note players with less than four seasons in the NFL will have to pass through waivers, while players with four or more years in the NFL will become free agents and can sign with any team they want.
We’ll track all the Patriots transactions, news, and rumors as they prepare their roster for the 2023 season.
Current roster size – 53/90
