Quarterback Malik Cunningham’s odds of making the 53-man roster increased due to a Patriots roster move.

According to Tom Pelissero, the Patriots are releasing veteran quarterback Trace McSorley.

The move isn’t a surprise, as McSorley only saw four attempts in the preseason, completing one pass for four yards.

McSorley, 28, entered the NFL as a sixth-round pick by the Ravens in 2019. McSorley joined the Arizona Cardinals after two seasons with Baltimore and signed with the Patriots before training camp.

The Penn State product has appeared in nine regular-season games, completing 51.6 percent of his passes while registering 48 completions for 502 yards. McSorley’s only career start was recorded against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last year.

Jones spoke on Boston radio’s WEII on Monday afternoon, talking about Trace McSorley’s impact.

“He has helped me a lot,” Jones said. “He’s an older quarterback, played for a few different teams, and taught me a lot.”

McSorley was a long shot to make the roster but could return to the practice squad if he goes unclaimed on waivers.

Bailey Zappe is expected to back Mac Jones this season, but Malik Cunningham could be a third option if needed. It’s unclear if Cunningham has made the team.

The Patriots must finalize their 53-man roster by Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. The Patriot’s current roster sits at 77 players.
