Patriots request interview with Panthers OLB coach Tem Lukabu for defensive coordinator

Newly appointed Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo is wasting no time assembling a coaching staff.

The New England Patriots will interview Carolina Panthers OLB coach Tem Lukabu, per NFL Insider Ian Rapoport.

Lukabu, 42, played linebacker at Colgate, where played all four seasons. It will be the first of many interviews for the Patriots this offseason. Lukabu was a former defensive coordinator for Boston College and spent three seasons. After he left Boston College, Lukabu was part of Mississippi State’s coaching staff. He moved on to the NFL, spending brief stints in Tampa Bay, San Francisco, Cincinnati, and finally, Carolina.

The Patriots have not used a defensive coordinator title since Matt Patricia was named to the role in 2018. Since, Brian Flores, Jerod Mayo and Steve Belichick have played roles in the Patriots defense.

Last week, the Patriots moved on from longtime defensive mind Bill Belichick. Although the offense has been lackluster the past three seasons, the defense has always been strong.

Earlier in the morning, it was reported that Jerod Mayo offered Bill Belichick’s sons, Steve and Brian, jobs on the Patriots coaching staff for 2024.

On Wednesday, the New England Patriots will introduce Jerod Mayo as the team’s 15th head coach.
