Even without RB Rhamondre Stevenson available against the Jets on Thursday Night Football, the expectation is that RB Terrell Jennings will be active, a league source tells The Patriots Beat.
Starting running back Rhamondre Stevenson has missed the last two games with a toe injury. However, his participation in practice this week was limited, which is a good sign he is getting closer to a return.
Like most injury situations, Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel was tight lipped and has not given any information to the media regarding the running back’s status.
Since Vrabel was not going to say anything, reporters went to the source himself. Before getting treatment, Jennings was asked about his injury.
“I will definitely be okay,” Jennings said. “It is just a little bruise.”
When asked if he expects to play on Thursday night, he confirmed he was day to day.
“I am just going to take it on a day to day basis trying to get right,” he said.
With all of that being said, the Patriots are pretty banged up on the running back depth chart. Last week in Tampa, Jennings left the game in the first quarter due to a left knee injury. There was no structural damage and he was labeled day to day. His game designation was listed as questionable with the hope he would be able to go.
The 24-year old is expected to be the backup to TreVeyon Henderson. The rookie ran for 147 yards and two touchdowns in Week ten and is looking for a repeat performance this week.
The Patriots also have the option to elevate a running back from the practice squad. The top option is veteran D’Ernest Johnson. They also have Rushawn Baker and Jonathan Ward, who could provide reinforcement for the group.
Thursday Night Football between the Patriots and Jets will kick off at 8:15 p.m. Eastern Time at Gillette Stadium.
