Heading into Thursday night, the hopes were high for many Patriots fans who believed the Patriots could draft a shutdown cornerback, number one wide receiver, or a fast linebacker. Despite that, the Patriots decided to trade down with the Chiefs.

While star players like Washington cornerback Trent McDuffie, Linebackers Devin Lloyd of Utah, and Quay Walker of Georgia were still available, Bill decided to trade down to get a guard out of Chattanooga, who was a projected day three pick. The selection wasn’t a huge surprise to fans because Bill loves to trade for value in the draft. The Patriots had the 29th pick in the first round and an extra third and fourth-round selection.

Strange, he has appeared in 49 college games in his career and started in 45 of them, primarily at left guard; he is what some would say a freak of nature. His athletic ability is what intrigued the Patriots so much to draft him. Although his strength may not be the same as Kenyon Green (15th pick) or Zion Johnson (17th pick), his athleticism makes up for that.

Cole Strange is set to be the starting guard taking over Ted Karras’s spot at left guard as he was acquired by the Bengals this offseason. Strange also has great injury history, rarely missing games, which is an exceptional trait for a lineman. While many see this as a strange pick, the Patriots needed to fill the need for a guard.
