With the 137th pick in the fourth round of the 2022 draft, the Patriots draft Baily Zappe, a Quarterback out of Western Kentucky.

With Mac Jones having an excellent start to his career, there was a question on why the Patriots would draft another young quarterback. However, Mac Jones’s starter spot is not in question and is secure, and it is not uncommon for Belichick to draft quarterbacks, as he did numerous times when Brady was running the offense.

Zappe’s college career started at Houston Baptist, which was his only offer. He started 36 games with a 60.9 percent completion rate with 10,004 passing yards and 78 touchdowns. After that season, he had an option to complete another season in college due to covid or enter the NFL draft. Instead, Zappe decided to transfer to Western Kentucky for his last year of eligibility, in which he broke records. He completed 69.2 percent of his pass attempts for 5,967 yards, 62 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions.

In New England, Zappe projects to be the third-string quarterback behind Mac Jones and Brain Hoyer. However, Zappe should be able to win the backup job long-term from Hoyer, who will likely transition to a coach.
