According to ESPNS’ Mike Reiss, the New England Patriots have signed former Tennessee Titan Anthony Firkser. The Patriots dealt Jonnu Smith at the beginning of the New NFL year but gained former Dolphins tight-end Mike Gesicki in free agency.
Firkser, 28, began his NFL career as an undrafted free agent and first signed with the New York Jets in 2017. Then, he had a brief stint with the Chiefs before signing with the Titans in 2018. He spent four seasons in Nashville before signing with the Atlanta Falcons, where he spent his 2022 campaign. Last season, Firsker recorded nine receptions for 100 yards and zero touchdowns. The Harvard alum has tallied 115 catches in his career for 1,207 yards and five touchdowns. His best season occurred in 2020 when he caught 39 catches for 387 yards and one score. Firkser would appear in 58 games for the Titans during his carrer, learning under former Patriots player Mike Vrabel.
The tight-end is great at extending plays and can pose as a reliable option during the summer, as he averaged 11.1 yards per reception last season and had zero drops. He also excels as a pass blocker, as he was graded the ninth best among all tight ends last season, according to Pro Football Focus.
Firsker, a Harvard alum, will return to Massachusetts this season. The length of the deal is unknown. He will join a tight-end core with Hunter Henry, Mike Gesicki, Matt Sokol, Johnny Lumpkin, and Scotty Washington.
The NFL punished the Patriots last night for holding unauthorized meetings during the offseason and were docked two OTAs practices. The team is scheduled to return to practice next Wednesday.
