Chargers Vs. Patriots Wild Card Preview

Tonight, the number two seed New England Patriots host the number seven seed Los Angeles Chargers at Gillette Stadium, with kickoff scheduled for 8:15 pm on NBC. New England enters the postseason as one of the league’s most complete teams, closing the 2025 regular season playing its best football on both sides of the ball.

Last Sunday, the Patriots overwhelmed Miami by a score of 38 -10, capping off a fourteen win regular season behind a dominant performance from Rhamondre Stevenson. Stevenson totaled 153 scrimmage yards and three touchdowns, once again proving to be the engine of the New England offense.

The Chargers, meanwhile, fell 19-3 to the top seeded Denver Broncos in Week 18, though Los Angeles rested its starters with its playoff positioning already secured.

What to Expect Tonight

From a matchup standpoint, this was close to a best case scenario for both organizations. For New England, the Chargers present a preferable draw compared to more physical or high variance opponents like Buffalo or Houston. From the Chargers’ perspective, they believed New England was the opponent they matched up best against entering the postseason.

That does not make this game easy. Far from it.

The Patriots will need to be sharp from the opening drive against a Chargers defense built on speed, discipline, and star power. Led by Derwin James, Los Angeles thrives on limiting explosive plays and forcing quarterbacks to be patient. In a primetime playoff setting with the entire league watching, execution and discipline will decide this game.

Drake Maye Steps Into the Spotlight

In just his second NFL season, Drake Maye will make his first career playoff start, and he does so with an MVP caliber résumé. Maye finished the 2025 season throwing for 4,394 yards, 31 touchdowns, and only eight interceptions, while adding four rushing scores and consistently delivering in high leverage moments.

For a sophomore quarterback, the poise and command Maye has shown all season has been remarkable. The Patriots have built this offense around his strengths, and there is little indication that the playoff stage will overwhelm him.

Keys to the Game and Expected Outcome

Offensively, New England has multiple ways to stress the Chargers. Wide receivers Stefon Diggs, Kayshon Boutte, and Kyle Williams will be relied upon to win matchups outside, while tight end Hunter Henry remains Maye’s go to option in critical situations.

In the backfield, Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson give New England flexibility in both the run game and the passing game, forcing the Chargers to defend every blade of grass.

Defensively, the Patriots’ success may hinge on the play of shutdown corner Christian Gonzalez, who will be tasked with limiting a Chargers receiving group that includes Keenan Allen, Quentin Johnston, and Ladd McConkey.

There is also history at play. This same Chargers franchise came into Foxborough in 2024 and handed New England a humiliating 40 to 7 loss under the previous regime. This Patriots team is different, and tonight represents an opportunity to prove it.

New England is chasing its first trip to the Divisional Round since the 2018 season, when it went on to win Super Bowl 53 against the Los Angeles Rams.

Under the lights, with momentum and belief on its side, the Patriots have a chance to take the next step forward.
