The New England Patriots are adding to their offensive line depth. The team has reached an agreement with former New York Jets tackle Morgan Moses on a three-year contract.
The contract, as first reported by NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, has a max value of $28.5 million.
Moses was selected by the Washington Redskins in the third round of the 2014 draft. He played college football at the University of Virginia and earned third-team All-ACC honors.
During his first season in the NFL, he played only one game, but the following year, he was named the starting right tackle. After playing out his five-year contract, Moses signed a one-year deal with the Jets ahead of the 2021 season. He then had a two-year stint with the Ravens before being traded back to the Jets.
Moses is 34 years old and will be 37 when his contract expires. According to Pro Football Focus, Moses allowed only two sacks across 723 offensive snaps last season. Moses is primarily a right tackle, which will allow Mike Onwenu to stay put at right guard. In addition, this will give Caedan Wallace another year to develop as a starting tackle.
The 6-foot-6, 320-pounder works well in a gap-blocking scheme because of his physicality in the run game. He does an excellent job of down-blocking, which bodes well for a power-run game. This fit the Ravens’ power-downhill run scheme perfectly. The Patriots run a lot of power, counter, and trap plays, all of which align with Morgan Moses’ skill set. Although he has a strong anchor, fast rushers off the edge can give him a little bit of trouble.
The Patriots have a common theme with all of their free-agent signings: familiarity with Mike Vrabel or other coaches. Moses played for Patriots receivers coach Todd Downing when he was with the Jets.
The Patriots had alarming issues on the offensive line last season, allowing 52 sacks in 2024. That marked the most since 1999, and with nine different offensive line combinations, it didn’t make Drake Maye’s job easy. That being said, Morgan Moses should bring veteran experience to the group.
