Report: Patriots hiring Veteran as Running Back’s Coach

The New England Patriots are replacing former running backs coach Taylor Embree.

According to The Athletic’s Zack Rosenblatt, the New England Patriots are hiring former Tennessee Titans running backs coach Tony Dews. The report comes one day after the team brought Josh McDaniels back for a third stint.

Dews, 51, has plenty of experience working with former Titans head coach Mike Vrabel, under whom he worked for six seasons in Tennessee. Joining the Titans as an assistant running backs coach in 2018, he coached NFL Offensive Player of the Year Derrick Henry.

After Vrabel was fired in 2024, Dews moved on, joining the New York Jets as their running backs coach.

Before coming to the NFL, he coached in college for 19 years, working at Millersville, California (PA), Holy Cross, Central Michigan, UNLV, Michigan, Pittsburgh, Arizona, and West Virginia (multiple stints). During this time, he held various roles coaching the offensive line, defensive line, special teams, linebackers, tight ends, wide receivers, and running backs.

Dews is the first reported offensive hire for Josh McDaniels and will now join a position group highlighted by Rhamondre Stevenson and Antonio Gibson.
