According to ESPN’s Mike Reiss and Adam Schefter, the New England Patriots are hiring former Lions defensive line coach Terrell Williams as their next defensive coordinator.
Williams, 50, started his NFL coaching career in 2012 as the defensive line coach for the Oakland Raiders and spent three seasons in Oakland. The Dolphins hired him for the same position, and he ended up in Tennessee in 2018 under Mike Vrabel. After Vrabel was let go by the Titans, he was hired by the Lions as their defensive line coach.
“The respect I have for him (Terrell Williams), the way that he goes about his business, the way he treats people, the way he treats coaches and players, he has a great grasp of it,” Vrabel told The Athletic via NBC Sports Boston.
Williams has accumulated more than 25 years of coaching experience in college and the NFL.
With the hiring of Williams, the Patriots have filled all of their coordinator spots. Now, the attention shifts to the assistant coaches. As of now, the Patriots only have one vacancy on the defense, with the team parting ways with defensive line coach Jerry Montgomery. It’s also important to note that Williams was promoted to assistant head coach for the 2023 season under Vrabel. The Patriots haven’t had an assistant head coach since Dante Scarnecchia held the role from 2000 to 2014.
