The New England Patriots will be officially conducting an interview with veteran coach and former Patriot Mike Vrabel on Thursday, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport
Vrabel, 49, is a three-time Super Bowl champion with the Patriots and played in New England from 2001 to 2008.
The former Patriot was a third-round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1997. He later signed a free-agent deal with the Patriots in 2001. In 2009, he was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs.
When his playing career concluded, he went into coaching. He first served as an assistant coach at Ohio State, where he played college football. Then, he worked under Bill O’Brien with the Houston Texans before being named Titans head coach in 2018.
He spent three years with the Titans but was unexpectedly fired at the start of 2024. He went 54-45 with three postseason trips with the Titans. Although he was one and done in their 2020 and 2021 playoff appearances, he earned NFL Coach of the Year for the 2021 season.
After getting fired, he joined the Cleveland Browns as a consultant this past season, but his contract expired last week.
Vrabel has already interviewed with the New York Jets and will interview with the Chicago Bears on Wednesday.
The Patriots have already fulfilled their obligation under the Rooney Rule by interviewing two minority candidates. As a result, they can theoretically hire Vrabel on Thursday. Many media members believe the Patriots will act quickly to find their next coach.
