Patriots expected to interview Mike Vrabel for head coach opening

The New England Patriots defeated the Buffalo Bills on Sunday to close out a disappointing 2024 campaign. In addition, the win confirmed the Patriots would drop all the way down to the fourth overall pick in the draft order. Shortly after their win* rookie head coach Jerod Mayo was fired.

After moving on from Jerod Mayo, the New England Patriots are expected to interview Mike Vrabel for their head coach opening, per ESPN’s Mike Reiss.

While the Patriots are expected to conduct a large coaching search involving multiple interviews with several different options, NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported there’s a “league-wide belief that the Patriots would be Vrabel’s first choice.”

The veteran coach interviewed with the New York Jets last week and has interest from the Chicago Bears and New Orleans, according to The Athletic’s Zach Rosenblatt.

According to CBS Sports’ Aditi Kinkhabwala, Vrabel interviewed with the Jets to “put pressure on the Patriots to make a move.”

The Patriots have one of the more desirable coaching gigs in the NFL as they lead the NFL with $131.5 million in cap space, and they own the fourth overall pick. But most importantly, they have Drake Maye, who has proven he can be an above-average starting quarterback in the NFL.

Hiring Vrabel is a no-brainier to some as the 49-year-old has a well-established relationship with the Patriots and has plenty of experience coaching in the NFL.
