Offense: 52 total snaps

Quarterbacks

Bailey Zappe: (34) 65%

Mac Jones: (18) 45%

The Patriots took an alternate approach on Monday night. They had two quarterbacks who were healthy take snaps. Mac Jones started the game after missing the last four games however was benched after 18 snaps. Bill Belichick would not specify after the game if this was a health-related move nor would he commit to who would be the quarterback in the future. Backup Bailey Zappe took the bulk load playing 65% of the snaps and finishing the game.

Running backs

Rhamondre Stevenson: (40) 77%

Damien Harris: (9) 17%

Pierre Strong Jr.: (3) 6%

One of the bigger storylines was Rhamondre Stevenson taking on the RB1 role for the third straight week. However, Damien Harris was inactive last week due to a hamstring injury which saw him exit early in Week 5. Harris was reportedly fully healthy, but the second-year running back Stevenson played most of the snaps, a major significant at the position. Strong Jr. saw no carries but played three snaps, as the rookie continues to see minimal action.

Wide receivers

Jakobi Meyers: (52) 100%

DeVante Parker: (48) 92%

Tyquan Thornton: (44) 85%

Nelson Agholor: (3) 6%

Jakobi Meyers was the only receiver to play all 52 snaps, but DeVante Parker wasn’t far along with 48. Meanwhile, Thornton was very active as well; he played 85% of the snaps in his second game of the season, taking over the WR3 role. Notably, Nelson Agholor was active but played just 3% of the snaps. Agholor is a trade candidate for New England and is coming off a hamstring injury.

Tight ends

Hunter Henry: (44) 85%

Jonnu Smith: (17) 35%

The Patriots rolled with their tight-end duo Hunter Henry and Jonnu Smith, with Henry playing 27 more snaps. However, their usage was the same, and both only had one catch, which was part of the reason the New England offense struggled.

Cole Strange, Micheal Onwenu, Trent Brown, and Marcus Cannon all played 52 snaps, while captain David Andrews didn’t play 100% of the snaps this season’s first game. Andrews left after injuring his head on an illegal blind-side block following a Bailey Zappe interception. James Ferentz took over for Andrews and played eight snaps.

For the first time this season, Davon Godchuax played the most snaps on the defensive line; he played 52 snaps which is also a season-high for him. Furthermore, Lawrence Guy returned after injuring his shoulder in Week 3, playing 79% of the snaps. After leading the defensive line in snaps played this season, Deatrich Wise Jr. played just 33 downs, possibly due to getting banged up during the game. Rookie Sam Roberts’s snaps decreased for the second straight week as he only saw the field once.

Ja’Whaun Bentley played the most snaps, but Matthew Judon was arguably the best Patriot player on the field Monday. Surprisingly, Anfernee Jennings started the game opposite of Bentley. He played 49% of the snaps. Meanwhile, Jahlani Tavai’s role continues to increase, playing 49 downs. In addition, New England elevated Jamie Collins from the practice squad and contributed with 22 snaps, playing in the 3-4 base package.

Defensive back

Devin McCourty: (67) 94%

The secondary had a rough night with respect to injury and performance. Kyle Dugger and Adrain Phillps had injuries that caused them to miss time. Due to their periodic absence, Jabrill Peppers had a season-high 34 snaps. New England signed Peppers in the offseason, and his role continues to increase as he’s working his way off an ACL injury. Meanwhile, Jonathon Jones and Jalen Mills were the starting corners with 51 and 48 snaps. The rookie Jack Jones was behind them with 38, and Myles Bryant played 31 downs and had one interception.

Noteworthy statlines and notes

WR Tyquan Thornton records first NFL start.

The rookie Tyquan Thornton had to wait to see the NFL field until Week 7 due to a collarbone injury that put him on the IR. WR Kendrick Bourne was inactive, which increased the opportunity for Thornton. Thornton started in a three-wide receiver package alongside Jakobi Meyers and DeVante Parker.

RB Rhamondre Stevenson started over Damien Harris.

Stevenson recorded his second start this season, the first coming last week. Damien Harris was inactive against the Browns in Week 6, and Stevenson carried the workload. Stevenson was the lead back this week, even with Damien Harris healthy.

Matthew Judon is chasing history after 2.5 sacks against the Bears.

LB Matthew Judon had his 10th career game with at least two sacks, bringing his 2022 total to 8.5. Judon is on pace for 21 sacks, which would be a Patriot record. In the 1984 season, Andre Tippit tallied 18.5 sacks which remains a franchise record.

Matthew Slater is now second in all-time games played for the Patriots

Matthew Slater is now second all-time in games played for New England. Playing in 213 games, he overtook Bruce Armstrong and now only trails Tom Brady, who played in 285 games. Slater was drafted in the 2008 season.

The patriots allow the first rushing touchdown to an opposing running back.

Going into Monday night, the Patriots had not allowed an opposing running back to score a touchdown, being the only team in the NFL to accomplish this feat. However, they allowed David Montgomery to score on a two-yard run.
