The New England Patriots continue their offseason theme, signing another player to an extension.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, defensive lineman Davon Godchaux has inked a two-year $21M contract with $16.5M guaranteed.
Last week, Godchaux spoke at training camp to reporters about feeling undervalued.
“It’s frustrating playing out here with no guaranteed money,” Godchaux said. I’ve been consistently playing the run throughout my eight years in the league, and I feel like I’m still in my prime, so I feel like I want to be rewarded like that also. So yeah, it’s frustrating.”
After it was reported that defensive tackle Christian Barmore would be out indefinitely with blood clots, talks between Godchaux’s reps and the Patriots seemed to ramp up. Drew and Jason Rosenhaus (representing Godchaux) attended Patriots practice on Tuesday. He was seen talking to Patriots ownership throughout practice.
Now that Godchaux has been extended, the attention will shift to Matthew Judon, who is visibly frustrated with his contract. The Athletic’s Dianna Russini reported that the Patriots sent Judon a contract offer in the last 48 hours, but the veteran quickly refuted the report.
Godchaux, 29, was drafted by the Miami Dolphins in the fifth round of the 2017 NFL Draft. He initially signed with the Patriots in 2021 and quickly signed a two-year, $20.8M extension with the team. While with the Patriots, he’s started all but one game, racking up 50 starts and recording 183 tackles and 2.5 sacks.
“I got a lot more years in me,” Godchaux told reporters. “I’m healthy. I’ve been available every game my last three years here.”
The Patriots have now extended or re-signed seven players in the offseason. Those include, Christian Barmore, Michael Onwenu, Kyle Dugger, Rhamondre Stevenson, Hunter Henry, Jabrill Peppers, and Kendrick Bourne in free agency.
