Future Patriots Hall-of-Famer Matthew Slater announced his retirement from football on Tuesday morning. Slater, 38, has been with the Patriots for the past 16 seasons and has played a significant part in the Patriot’s success.
“Pats Nation, it has been an honor to represent the silver, red, white and blue for 16 years,” Slater wrote. “Thank you for cheering, challenging, and supporting our team every year. To the people of New England, thank you for welcoming my family and me into your community and allowing us to call New England home. We are beyond humbled and blessed. You, the fans, make an NFL player’s experience what it is. Thank you for supporting not only me but our great game.”
Slater joined the Patriots as a fifth-round draft pick in the 2008 draft. Since Slater has won three Super Bowls and been nominated to the Pro Bowl 10 times, his Pro Bowls mark the most out of all NFL special-team players. In addition, the special-teamer earned All-Pro awards in 2016 and 2019.
Slater appeared in 239 games with the Patriots and is second behind Tom Brady (285) with the most games played in Patriots history. In addition, he was a captain for 13 straight seasons. Whenever Belichick had the opportunity to praise Slater, he acknowledged how he’s one of a kind.
Retirement doesn’t come as a huge surprise. In the Patriots’ 2023 regular-season finale, Patriots players wore “Captain 18” hoodies before the game.
Slater ended his statement by thanking his father, Jackie Slater, who played professional football.
“Dad, you blazed the trail,” Slater wrote. “You set the standard. I hope I didn’t miss anything. I hope I followed those footsteps well. It was never a burden. Only a blessing. A gift from the Lord.”
