Former Patriots fourth-round pick Jack Jones and the Patriots’ coaching staff reached a new low point during the Patriots Week 9 matchup in Frankfurt, Germany.
According to a report from Andrew Callahan and Doug Kyed from the Boston Herald, Jack Jones “blew up” on cornerback coach Mike Pellegrino during halftime of the Patriots loss to the Colts. Jones only played ten snaps during the Patriots 10-6 loss in Germany.
Jack Jones was presumably upset about not starting in Germany. One day after the Patriots fell to 2-8 in Germany, the Patriots cut second-year quarterback Jack Jones.
“Certainly we want to thank the Patriot organization for drafting Jack,” Jones’ agent said in a statement. “Jack is an immense talent and looks forward to making an immediate contribution on his next team as soon as Sunday.”
Less than a day later, the Las Vegas Raiders claimed Jones. Currently, Jones is finding success with his old Head Coach, Antonio Pierce. Jones has returned two interceptions for touchdowns, one coming against former MVP Patrick Mahomes.
“I would say it wasn’t the best fit,” Jones told the media in his first press appearance since being waived by the Patriots.
Jones was cut because of discipline and off-the-field issues. The 26-year-old cornerback reportedly missed curfew at the team hotel in Week 8. As a result, Jones didn’t start the next day and was visibly upset on the sidelines with a hood draped over his head.
His off-the-field issues aren’t something new – the Patriots suspended the cornerback last January for missing rehab sessions while he recovered from a knee injury. Furthermore, in June, Jones was arrested at Boston Logan International Airport after he allegedly tried to bring two loaded firearms through TSA screening.
Prosecutors charged Jones with two counts each of possession of a concealed weapon in a secure area of an airport, possession of ammunition without a Firearm Identification Card, carrying a loaded firearm, and possession of a large-capacity feeding device.
Jones eventually agreed to a deal in September. He had all charges dropped against him and, in return, accepted a year of pre-trail probation and 48 hours of community service.
Jones, 26, appeared in 18 games for the Patriots, tallying two interceptions, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, and 42 tackles.
The Patriots end their 2023 season against the New York Jets at 1:00 p.m. EST on Sunday.
